Introduction A smart grid transfers information in the power generation, transmission, distribution and consumer chain using digital technology to increase stability and optimize configuration. It enables digital information collection, data processing and system analysis and disturbance prediction to provide optimum control and interoperation to the power grid. Scope of Smart Grids NR represents a true innovation in offering the smart grid solution, products and service for the entire power system from the dispatching, generation, transmission and distribution to the end users, by assisting them to realizing the digitalized, network-based and intelligent operation of power systems. Self-healing —— The RCS-992 power stability control system (PSCS) provide utilities with ability to detect and predict the load of the entire system in real time. It enables the quick and intelligent response such as generator shut down and load shedding, to stabilize the system before it loses synchronization. For multiple faults which PSCS is unable to stabilize the system, the RCS-993 out-of-step relay and RCS-994 frequency & voltage control device are essential to prevent the large area outage and minimize load loss. Security —— NR’s RCS-900 series protective relays and the PCS-9500 HVDC control and protection system are used to identify disturbance at the first time and to provide quickly diagnose and reliable shut down, to ensure the safe and uninterrupted operation of the power system. NR’s unique protection devices, which is developed based on the Deviation of Power Frequency Component(DPFC) and is immune to the load current and system power swing, can provide the transmission utility with sensitive and accurate response in the shortest time in the world. The protection products cover the full range of solutions for power generation, transmission and distribution and consumers, including generator protection, transformer protection, busbar protection, transmission line protection, circuit breaker protection, reactor protection, capacitor protection, motor protection, feeder protection and industrial PCC and MCC protections. High-effective —— NR’s full scale automation system enables real time measurement, monitoring and control, leading to the complete automation for power generation, transmission, distribution and consumption. These automation systems include the RCS-9001 dispatching automation system, the RCS-9700 substation/power plant/industrial automation system and the PCS-9002 distribution automation system. The dispatching automation system can help to enhance the economic efficiency of grid with the optimum resources configuration and most effective energy management. NR’s Ethernet switches support single/dual distributed optic Ethernet, single/dual ring Ethernet and wireless network, and the protocol converters create the communication networks compatible with many different protocol standards. The GPS synchronization devices provide a unified time reference to all devices in the network for data sampling and comparison. Digitalization —— The innovative digital substation solution integrates the PCS-9250 ECT/EVT, the PCS-9820 GIS/AIS intelligent control device, PCS-220/221 merging unit, and the PCS series protection and automation devices supporting GOOSE and IEC 61850-8-2. The intelligent induction devices are embedded into the primary devices to create a communication network instead of cables. It facilitates the maintenance work and prolongs the operation cycle while enabling the information sharing and interoperation process. High power quality —— The PCS-9580 static var compensator(SVC) enables the rapid and effective reactive power regulation which reasonably distributes the power flows in the entire grid and thus the energy quality is improved. The PCS-9580 SVC includes the TCR valve groups, water-cooling system, reactors, filter groups, control protection devices, valve control devices and auxiliary devices. The RCS-9650 automatic-transfer device can automatically switch-over to the grid when the power supply is disconnected due to fault so as to ensure the uninterrupted power supply to the users. Memory —— PCS-996 disturbance recorder can record the post-fault parameter variation and the operation behavior of protection and automation devices in real time, to facilitate the post-fault analysis. Its distributed structure enables the measurement and disturbance for wide area applications. 3.
